Following the publication of the draft Design Principles in February 2015, the final Design Principles for the Essential Skills Wales Suite of Qualifications are now available. This document sets out the rationale, structure, aims, learning outcomes and assessment requirements for the Essential Skills Wales Suite of qualifications for teaching from September 2015.
The technical criteria have been developed in collaboration with awarding organisations, particularly C&G, WJEC, Agored and Pearson. The revised assessments have been contextualised and trialled by practitioners across FE, WBL, ACL and alternative settings. Recommendations from this trial have informed amendments to create the final version.
Awarding organisations will use this document as the framework and criteria to create Essential Skills Wales stand alone qualifications in:
- Essential Application of Number Skills (Entry 1 to level 3)
- Essential Communication Skills (Entry 1 to level 3)
- Essential Digital Literacy Skills (Entry 1 to level 3)
- Essential Employability Skills (Entry 3 to level 3)
The subject specifications for Essential Communications and Application of Number Skills have not changed, the assessment has been significantly strengthened with the introduction of a controlled task and supporting test.
The Essential Digital Literacy and Employability Skills qualifications are more innovative. The Essential Digital Literacy Skills, replacing ESW ICT, has the 6 strands of digital responsibility, productivity, collaboration, creativity, information literacy and learning and will be assessed using a controlled task and a structured discussion.
The Essential Employability Skills, replacing Wider Key Skills, has the 4 strands of critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, planning and organising and personal effectiveness. The assessment will be through a controlled task and a structured discussion.
